Multiple gunshots were heard near the Pentagon's Metro bus platform and the facility is now on lockdown.

"The Pentagon currently is on lock down due to an incident at the Pentagon Transit Center. We are asking the public to please avoid the area. More information will be forthcoming," the Pentagon Force Protection Agency (Official) Twitter account posted at 11:01AM.

According to NBC Washington, a local Associated Press reporter heard the gunshots.

Due to the police activity, trains are currently bypassing the Pentagon.

This story is developing.

Correction 11:24AM: an early version of this story incorrectly stated that the incident occurred at the Penatgon Metro station.

Update: 12:19PM: The Pentagon has lifted the lockdown and is reopened. The Pentagon Force Protection Agency says Corridor 2 and the Metro entrance will remain closed but Corridor 3 is open for pedestrian traffic. "The scene of the incident is secure. It is still an active crime scene. We request that everyone stay away from the Metro rail entrance and bus platform area. Transportation at the Pentagon is diverted to Pentagon City."

Update: 2:29PM: Sources are reporting that a police officer has died following the incident outside of the Pentagon. The officer reportedly was stabbed and later died from his injuries.
