I thought I would do something different today. Yes, I could talk about the Real Housewives of New Jersey Reunion or the cute waiter at Don Pablos that served me on Saturday night, but I would rather talk about the simple things in life, some of my favorite songs.
When I was in high school, I was in choir (insert joke here) and my teacher made us sing this song, "If Music Be The Food Of Love, Sing On, Sing On." All I could think about was eating the cupcakes off that cupcake bra Katy Perry used to wear all the time. That sounds dirty, but I didn't mean it to be. Like, I seriously just thought about cupcakes. Also, we're playing Katy Perry's "Teenage Dream" on the radio right now so really who knows.
One sec.
Okay, it's not on anymore, because Erick asked me to go get him water in the kitchen where I discovered this odd "indian chi tea" latte mix, do you think people actually like that? Now Maroon 5 is playing.
I thought of this when I was listening to the Country Strong soundtrack this morning. I thought, if music is the soundtrack to my life then why don't I put my IPhone on shuffle and see what comes up. Then, I will tell you the story behind the song. Kind of like "Behind the Music" but literal.
Okay, putting the IPhone on shuffle, it's spinning and spinning and BOOM we have landed on a song!
"That's Not My Name" By the Ting Tings
I LOVED the Ting Tings, unfortunately, not that many other people did because they fell off the Top 40 stratosphere once That's Not My Name fell off the charts. I saw the happy, go-lucky British band on one of my last nights of high school. It happened to be the same night as the regional theater awards (think sectionals on Glee, but with theater kids). So I didn't go to the theater awards (scandalous!), and saw the show, on a school night! I was such a rebel.
Ok, next!
"Omigod You Guys" from Legally Blonde the Musical
I told you I was a theater kid! Approximately 15% of my music is from musicals. If I could pick a song that defined my life, it would be Omigod You Guys. The first time I saw the movie was with my cousin on Thanksgiving when I was 10. After I watched it the first time I insisted that we watch it again. So we did, four times in a row. Soon I had the entire movie memorized and would perform monologues from it regularly to anyone who would listen. I had impromptu performances at the Lake, the mall and in the cafeteria. Ten years later, I still have them memorized, though I haven't performed them in a long while. Maybe I'll break one out at Christmas!
One of the best movies of all time
Time to shuffle. Let's see what comes up and it IS...
"Sleepyhead" By Passion Pit
I'm seeing Passion Pit tomorrow for the first time ever! I have wanted to see them for forever, but they haven't come around in a while because the lead singer has issues. Sleepyhead was basically the soundtrack to my sophomore year of college. I can't remember who introduced it to me, but I remember that everyone was playing it. When I used to sign into my dorm, the girl working at the front desk was always playing this song and dancing in her seat, sometimes I would join her.
My phone knows me well because it is time for a Christmas Song!
"Christmas Tree" by Lady Gaga featuring Space Cowboy.
THIS! OMIGOD! YOU MUST LISTEN RIGHT NOW!!!!! This is one of my favorite Christmas songs! This is vintage Gaga, it was recorded before Just Dance was even popular. How retro! Warning, it's a little dirty so shield small ears. This is the perfect song to put you in the Christmas spirit. 70 Days till the big man arrives people!
Last one is.....
"All Through The Night" by Cyndi Lauper
My big brother introduced me to this song. He has an old jukebox and one afternoon he had all 80s songs in it. He told me to just pick a song at random and see what I get, like one of those old Arcade games. I picked this song. The twinkling sounds at the beginning reminded me of the jewelry box my mother gave me as a child that had a dancing ballerina on it. It played a song from Swan Lake. I loved that jewelry box and I loved this song. That afternoon we listened to this song and I pretended to dance like a ballerina. I bought the song that night on ITunes and now whenever I hear it I'm with my brother dancing like the ballerina I thought I was.
We have come to the end. I hope you add these songs to your library. What are some of your favorite songs? Let's talk about it on Twitter!, @alipannoni!
Also, if you haven't listened to the Lindsay Lohan interview on TMZ you must, it is gold.
I love you!
