After 8 long months, today is my last day as an intern for the Kane Show.
For the last 8 months I have:
-Gotten up at 3:30am
-Gone to McDonalds to get Sarah and I coffee
- Half the time time during my McDonalds run, I would be questioned by the same McDonalds employees every single day as to why I continuously come to the drive through with my Redskins flags on my car. Just my luck that several of the employee’s were crazy Cowboys fans. I made sure I always kept an eye on them making my coffee just in case they wanted revenge after we beat them…
- The other half of the time, I would come across the same employee, a sweet man named Francis, who, for being up that early, was always so happy and energetic but also slightly clueless. Half the time, when I was at the drive through window, I would be waiting for several minutes listening to Francis talk because he never would remember to turn his headset off.
- Actual quotes by Francis:
- “No, no! It’s breakfast now! No more buns! No more buns!”
- “Where are the sausages? I need the sausages!”
- *In reference to me, because he eventually memorized my order* “Let me make her drink! I know how she likes it! Extra caramel!”
- I gotta say, he must have been the most incompetent, but sweetest man in the world and although it took him about 10 minutes to make coffee, he was still quite entertaining and a great start to the morning.
-Eventually I would get to the show and I would get the jobs done. The most aggrivating thing was during the summer we would get a lot of prank calls from bored kids who were on summer vacation. Normally, we could handle it and could get them to stop pretty quickly but the worst was those people who would literally call, wait for us to answer, say nothing, we hang up and then they call again. Worst part was, we were required to answer so sometimes this would go for the ENTIRE show! The phone answering system we use really needs a number blocking system…
- Don’t get me started on the butt-dialers!
- Even worse was the crazy little girls calling non stop for days for One Direction tickets. Now that was exhausting!
My favorite moments of the last 12 months:
- When I met Train, Matchbox 20, and Trey Songz
- Live Tweeting from @KanetwIntern in Tysons while Intern Ali was also Live Tweeting from the same Twitter account as we both saw the midnight showing of Magic Mike! My favorite part of the night was sneaking in my home-made Mojitos for my friends and the single mom who came by herself that was lucky to be sitting next to me.
- Grabbing lunch and seeing Magic Mike (again) with Sarah and hearing her squealing whenever Matthew Mcconaughey was doing something that involved him wearing little to no clothes.
- Sneaking on to listen to another local station change their music to Christmas music. Every year I listen to the countdown before the holiday music officially starts and it was even more exciting this year because I may have been sitting in my cubical at the Kane Show, but that station airs down the hall so it was exciting knowing I was that close. What I would have given to run off for a few minutes and countdown with them!
- Pretty much every time I got to go on air!
Also a quick shoutout to Izé’s for being the best bagel/breakfast place I’ve ever been to. I’ve gotta say, you made my morning sandwich’s incredibly well. I’m dissapointed you don’t have a location in Tyson’s Corner because I would proably come ever single day.
I learned a lot about the radio business in the last 8 months. I am thankful for the opportunity that I was given and I will never forget the lessons I learned, both in radio and about life.
Tweet me @StephStratos to keep up with my life! Next semester I plan on taking Sarah’s advice she gave me. We were discussing how I would love to venture out of the Washington DC area to NYC or LA to try living out my dreams. Originally, I was nervous at leaving my family behind but Sarah helped me realized that if you want to live your dream, you have to try something no matter how afraid you are, otherwise you’ll regret it.
We’ll see what the future holds for me, but for now, I’d like to say this is Intern Stephanie, signing off, for now…
